Frequently Asked Questions

Will a face mask protect me from the corona virus or other pathogens?

Our filters are made from a melt blown, non-woven 100% polypropylene which blocks out over 95% of particles down to 0.3 microns in diameter - this includes dust, pollution, allergens and aerosol droplets that can contain pathogens such as viruses

This provides one of the highest levels of filtration available, and is a great tool in the fight against infection. However, it cannot guarantee protection. Therefore, you still need to take care to wash your hands regularly and avoid touching your face

Why should I buy a THYRA face mask?

The THYRA face mask is designed to be very breathable while providing important protection against harmful particles such as pathogens and toxins in the air.

  • It has a replaceable filter, which provides one of the highest levels of particulate filtration while maintaining breathability.

  • The filter has a bendable metal nose clip that is key for ensuring you minimise the leakage of air through the top of the mask.

  • The mask itself it made from a very soft and durable material which can be thrown in the wash at 40°C after the filter has been taken out. It dries quickly, can be ironed or dry cleaned.

  • Each filter should last 1 month, depending on usage and exposure. Please use your judgement based on the situations that you encounter.

What material are the masks made from?

What is the filter made of?

Our filter is made from a melt blown, non-woven 100% polypropolene material which filters out over 95% of particles down to 0.3 microns. It has one of the highest filtration rates and is normally used for industrial masks to protect from dust and other polluting particles. It has a bendable metal nose clip that you squeeze around your nose when you put on the mask, to give a close and comfortable fit that minimises air leakage around the nose. It has been given a comfortable, structural support with a cotton band sewn around the edge of the filter which does not interfere with the filter's protecting capability.

Please remove the filter from the mask before washing the mask. The filter material is delicate and cannot be washed. It can be reused in the clean mask. Hold the filter at the nose clip, glide it in through the pocket, aligning the top of the nose clip with the top seam of the mask, then check the filter is lying flat inside the mask before putting it on.

If you think the mask may have been exposed to a pathogen it can be left out in a clean, dry, warm environment for 72 hours which will kill most pathogens including viruses. However, if the face mask has been soiled, it is recommended to discard the filter.

How do I insert the filter?

The mask has a pocket on the internal, right-hand side of the face. The easiest way to insert the filter is to hold the filter by the metal nose clip, and slightly bend the bottom of the filter so it easily slides in through the pocket. Align the metal nose clip with the top seam, and check that the sides and bottom of the filter extend to the internal edges of the mask

Check the straps are the right length for you, or adjust them by pulling on the straps

You are good to go!

How long can I use the mask and filter?

The mask is made from a durable and versatile material. It can be washed at 40°C, and dries very quickly, making it extremely practicle. It can also be ironed on low heat or dry cleaned, if you wish. It is made of a sports material so it is very breathable and also provides the highest level of sun protection (UPF50+) while being resistant to most skin creams and oils. The material is recyclable

The lifespan of the filter depends on its usage, however with regular, normal wear in normal environments it should last about 1 month. The filter material is delicate and should be treated with care. It can tolerate some bending, squashing and other handling

Will the straps hurt my ears?

The straps are made from the same ultra-comfortable material as the mask, instead of using an elastic. This is one of our key design features that ensures a comfortable fit, even over longer time periods
